What is Mulch and Why Is It Beneficial To Me?

Whether you know it or not, you see mulch every day. This ubiquitous gardening and landscape material is an essential component when cultivating a healthy and vibrant yard over the long-term. The question on your mind, though, probably is—what is mulching, and what advantages does it offer?

Mulch is an organic material that’s spread around the top of plants as a way of protecting the soil. The layer keeps moisture and nutrients in the ground through insulation. There are several different types of mulch, including:

  • Compost
  • Decaying leaves
  • Grass clippings
  • Manure
  • Shredded or chipped bark
  • Straw

Mulch is useful beyond its insulating properties. For instance, it helps minimizes soil compaction that can otherwise restrict the plant’s growth and access to essential food and sunshine. The layer of mulch serves as a cushion, so wayward footsteps don’t condense the soil around the plant.

The addition of mulch can also protect plants from lawn mower damage. It serves as a protective coating against lawn mower blades and is especially useful for low-lying plants. Mulch can retain heat through buffering properties during the frigid winter months, as well.

How Many Yards Of Mulch Will I Need?

mulch piles north attleboro mansfield wrentham ma 750px

You need to know two numbers to figure out how much mulch you need: square footage and mulch depth. Multiplying these figures together will provide the answer. For instance, if you have a 30′ x 10′ flower bed and want two inches of depth, you will need 900 square feet of coverage, which converts to 25 cubic feet or 1.85 cubic yards. You can also use a mulch calculator to estimate the total.

Determining square footage is straightforward. Square or rectangular beds require you to multiply the length and width. Gardens that are circular or untraditional shapes may require introductory geometry or a rough estimation for its half of the equation.

As a rule of thumb, you should apply an inch or two of fine mulch around your plants. For example, ground mulch possesses small particles, and more than two inches of it may suffocate the plants. If the mulch is coarse, such as shredded bark, then three or four inches may be appropriate.

How Come I Can’t Get My Edging To Look The Right Way?

Lack of experience. Improper tools. Poor technique. There are many reasons why edging may not look exactly right. Fortunately, at A. Buckley Landscaping, we have the hands-on expertise to ensure every blade of grass is uniform in appearance.

Here is what our technicians do:

  1. Mow the lawn – Side to side and edge to edge—we cut your entire yard to minimize the chances of over-edging

  2. Vertical Cutting – Our technicians flip the trimmer 180 degrees and follow the outline of your lawn. Meanwhile, the guard protects our legs from debris.

  3. Pacing – There is no reward for finishing first. Instead, we focus on trimming in a controlled and precise manner as we work our way around the perimeter.
